Lampung Black Pepper
Indonesia’s spices are one of the best in the world. Of the many spice producing regions, Lampung is one of the best regions capable of producing quality spices, one of which is black pepper. Until now, black pepper has become one of the mainstay spices in Lampung Province.
Lampung black pepper has obtained a Geographical Indication Certificate because it has a good history and reputation in the domestic and international markets. The certificate, which was issued in 2015, represents the legality of Lampung Black Pepper whose quality has been tested. Apart from that, the certificate also indicates the Lampung people’s ownership of their black pepper which has distinctive taste and aroma characteristics that are not found in other regions in the world.
Lampung black pepper has a characteristic black to brownish color with a maximum water content of 13 percent, piperine content of 3.29 – 4.7 percent, essential oil 1.14 – 2.89 percent, and oleoresin 12.8 – 15.20 percent. It is small and dense, but has a spicy level that can last a long time with a strong aroma.
Export of Black Pepper
Based on records from the Lampung Quarantine Center, in 2019 black pepper exports reached 15,600 tons. Then, black pepper exports in the January – May 2021 period reached around 7,000 tons. The Lampung Provincial Government also notes that Lampung has become one of the largest spice exporters in the world, with black pepper as a mainstay. The Lampung government also noted that the total export value of Lampung Black Pepper in 2022 will reach 26,126 tons and contribute 56% of national exports. In early 2023, the Lampung Government recorded that 100 tons of Lampung black pepper had been exported to China.
