5 Interesting Facts About Robusta Coffee

Robusta coffee is one type of coffee that is very well known and most commonly found, especially in Indonesia. Globally Robusta coffee represents between 40% and 45% of global production. In fact, there are many other types of coffee in circulation, but Robusta and Arabica coffee are the most famous.

Each type of coffee has its own characteristics, such as different regions of origin and different flavors. In this article we will discuss the characteristics of Robusta coffee by comparing it with Arabica coffee. For those of you who are curious, let’s read further!

  • Robusta Beans

If you pay attention, Robusta coffee beans are slightly different from other coffee beans. Robusta coffee beans tend to be round, while Arabica coffee beans are more oval. In terms of size, Robusta coffee is usually smaller than Arabica coffee.

  • Robusta Bean Care

In terms of planting, Robusta coffee tends to be easier to plant because it can grow in the lowlands. Apart from that, Robusta beans can also grow in hot weather and are resistant to pests and diseases. These various conditions mean that Robusta coffee is planted more widely in Indonesia than other types of coffee. In comparison, Arabica coffee can only grow at lower temperatures, such as on top of a mountain with sufficient water content, which is at a temperature of 18 – 22 degrees Celsius. In terms of growth, Robusta coffee can grow up to 4.5 – 6 meters, while Arabica can only reach a height of 2.5 – 4.5 meters.

  • Robusta Coffe Flavor

Due to the differences in shape and planting, the resulting taste will definitely differ. In terms of bitterness level, Robusta coffee has a more bitter taste than other types of coffee. This can happen because Robusta coffee has a lower sugar content and 2.2% higher caffeine than Arabica coffee.

  • Robusta Coffe Processing

Processing robusta coffee beans tends to be easier, after picking the beans you only need to skin them and dry them in the oven. This is different from other coffees, for example Arabica coffee which is more sensitive. Araabi coffee needs to be pulped, fermented, dried in the sun to dry naturally using sunlight, and other special treatments.

  • Can be enjoyed directly or processed

Basically, the existing types of coffee can be enjoyed straight away, but for other modified drinks such as lattes, iced milk coffee and other creative coffee drinks, it is more suitable to use robusta coffee. This is because Robusta coffee is suitable for modification by combining it with cream or milk to balance the bitter taste of Robusta coffee, unlike other types of coffee which already have their own tastes.
